A Cape May Photographer Shares Why the Town is So Special
As a Cape May photographer, I’m lucky to call one of the most picturesque towns in the country my workplace. There’s a timeless charm about Cape May, NJ, that makes it stand out among other coastal destinations, offering an incredible mix of natural beauty, historic elegance, and a welcoming, laid-back vibe. From the moment you arrive, it’s easy to see why this town has captured the hearts of photographers and visitors alike. Whether it’s the golden light that dances over the Atlantic Ocean at sunrise or the intricate details of the Victorian homes that line the streets, Cape May is a feast for the eyes—and the camera lens.
One of the things that makes Cape May so beautiful is its dedication to preserving its history. The town is home to one of the largest collections of Victorian architecture in the United States, and each house tells its own story with colorful facades, ornate trims, and stained-glass windows. As a photographer, these homes provide a unique backdrop that feels like stepping into another time. Whether it’s a romantic engagement session on the porch of a charming bed-and-breakfast or a lifestyle shoot capturing families strolling through the cobblestone streets of the historic district, the architectural beauty of Cape May is unparalleled.
Another reason Cape May is a photographer’s dream is its incredible variety of natural landscapes. Of course, the beaches are a centerpiece, with their soft, sandy shores and rolling dunes, but there’s so much more to explore. Cape May Point State Park, for instance, is a sanctuary for wildlife photographers, especially during migration season when countless species of birds make their way through the area. The iconic Cape May Lighthouse, located within the park, is not only a striking landmark but also a symbol of the town’s enduring connection to the sea. Sunset Beach is another treasure, where evenings bring breathtaking views of the sun dipping into Delaware Bay, leaving behind fiery skies that feel almost surreal in their beauty.
Cape May isn’t just visually stunning—it’s also full of life and personality. The marina, for example, is always buzzing with activity, from boats coming and going to fishermen unloading their catch of the day. It’s a vibrant, colorful scene that’s perfect for candid and dynamic photography. Meanwhile, Washington Street Mall, with its unique boutiques and cozy cafes, exudes small-town charm. Capturing the candid interactions of people enjoying ice cream, shopping for souvenirs, or simply sitting on a bench soaking up the atmosphere is one of my favorite ways to showcase Cape May’s heart and soul.
What truly sets Cape May apart, though, is its light. Photographers are always chasing perfect light, and Cape May seems to have an abundance of it. The golden hour here, with the sun casting long shadows and bathing everything in a warm glow, feels magical. Whether I’m shooting a couple’s portrait session on the beach or capturing the waves against the rocky jetty, that soft, dreamy light elevates every image.
Cape May is more than a location—it’s an experience, and its beauty inspires creativity with every visit. For a photographer, it’s a canvas that never gets old.
