First Birthday & Cake Smash Photography in Bucks County, PA

Your baby only turns one once. It goes by incredibly fast, which is why a first birthday photography session is such a wonderful way to preserve this little stage before your baby officially becomes a toddler.
For families in Bucks County, a cake smash can be a fun, playful way to celebrate the milestone—and you don’t have to choose between beautiful portraits and messy birthday fun. You can have both!
This first birthday session was filled with personality, connection, and plenty of opportunities to capture the little details that make this age so special.
Why Choose a Cake Smash for First Birthday Photos?
Some families want classic portraits of their one-year-old. Others love the idea of letting their baby get messy with a birthday cake.

There isn’t a right or wrong choice.
A cake smash gives your baby something fun to interact with instead of asking them to sit still and pose for an extended period of time. At this age, movement, curiosity, expressions, and personality are all part of what makes the photographs so memorable.
And sometimes the best photographs happen when your baby completely ignores the cake!
First Birthday Photography at My Newtown Farmhouse Studio
I host cake smash sessions at my farmhouse studio in Newtown, PA. The studio gives us the flexibility to photograph indoors with beautiful natural light or use the outdoor setting when the weather and season cooperate.
And perhaps the best part for parents?
I take care of the setup and the cleanup.
You simply bring your baby, their cake, and a change of clothes, and we can concentrate on celebrating this milestone.

5 Tips for a Successful Cake Smash Photo Session
1. Don’t expect your baby to know what to do
A one-year-old has never been to a cake smash before!
Some babies immediately dive into the cake. Others poke it, stare at it, taste one tiny bite, or decide they would rather do literally anything else.
That’s completely normal.

The goal isn’t to make your baby perform for the camera. It’s to give them the freedom to explore while I photograph their natural expressions and personality.

2. Bring a favorite snack
Sometimes the cake isn’t enough to convince a baby to start eating.
If your little one has a favorite snack, bring it along. Something familiar can help make the experience more comfortable and can even encourage them to interact with the cake.

3. Bring an extra outfit—or two
Cake smash sessions can get messy!
An extra change of clothes is always a good idea, especially if you’d like to finish the session with some clean portraits.
And don’t worry about keeping the birthday outfit pristine. The whole point is to have fun.
4. Follow your baby’s lead
There are no rules saying your baby has to smash the cake.

Some babies love it. Some aren’t interested. Some take a while to warm up.
I photograph the experience as it unfolds rather than trying to force a particular reaction. Sometimes the tiny moments—a curious expression, a little hand reaching toward the cake, or a huge smile—end up being everyone’s favorite images.
5. Have fun!
This is the biggest one.
Your baby is only one for a very short time. Don’t spend the session worrying about whether the cake is being smashed “correctly” or whether your child is doing what you expected.
Enjoy it.
Years from now, you’ll probably care much more about the expression on your baby’s face and the way you felt looking at these photographs than whether the cake smash went exactly according to plan.

Cake Smash or Traditional First Birthday Photos?
If cake isn’t your thing, that’s perfectly okay.
A first birthday photography session doesn’t have to include a cake smash. We can create beautiful milestone portraits outdoors or at another location that fits your family.
For families who want an outdoor first birthday session, locations such as Tyler State Park, Core Creek Park, and other Bucks County locations can provide a beautiful setting.
The most important thing is choosing a session that feels like your family.
Planning Your Baby’s First Birthday Photos
If you’re considering first birthday photography, I recommend reaching out before your baby’s actual birthday approaches. Having the date reserved ahead of time gives us more flexibility when planning the session and choosing the setting.
Whether you envision a playful cake smash at my Newtown farmhouse studio or relaxed family portraits outdoors, your baby’s first birthday is worth documenting.
